Week 1 Thing 2

I have taken responsibility for my self by going back and viewing the things i missed in doing 23 things. I am now blogging about life long learning. Accepting responsibility for my learning is something that i feel is important as is accepting responsibility for all things that you do in life. I think that going back now and addressing these things is good. I had many challenges in doing these exercises and now with a little more time and hindsight i hope to address some of these challenges. Having confidence in yourself as a competent and effective learner is necessary or we would never attempt new things. So I hope to go back and be more effective in using the tools, books and technology in a thoughtful way. I will also speak with others about the program. So here goes.

WEEK 9 THING 23

I have mixed feelings about this project. I learned about many things i never knew about and learned how to use some of them. This was good. I enjoyed flickr. It was fun learning what I could do with pictures. I also found YouTube and podcasting interesting. I hope to use some of the bloglines i signed up for,especially the book reviews.
I do not like signing up for the various things. I don't like having all these passwords to remember and i do not like my name out their for all to see. I would suggest that there be some way of doing these things without having to register for all of them.
I think just knowing about some of these things will be helpful for my work with customers. I will be able to help them in using some of these tools.

I read all about overdrive. I did not sign up as i was using a staff computer and did not want to use that machine to download to that machine. It is a great service and i know that someday i will be using it. I also read about the Gutenberg Project.

WEEK 9 THING 21

I found Yahoo to be the most useful of the sites listed for podcasts. On Podcast.net I wasn't able to find what i was looking for. I was trying to get book reviews and found "Between the Lines" on Yahoo. It had a nice selection of book reviews. I did not have time to listen to any but hope to try soon. I finally figured out how to post a podcast on my blogline and was able to do it by myself. Way to go girl.

I used YouTube. I enjoyed it. I wish i had more time to spend looking at videos but I really don't. I watched the democratic debate on cnn where they used utube to ask questions. I don't think this is the greatest way to question the candidates but what is? I think YouTube can be useful for homework assignments. It might be an entry on a bibliography or it is a great resource for teachers who would be able to show some interesting subject or make a point to a class

I tried several of these sites listed on the short list. Judy's Book was not what I expected. It was listed under city guides and reviews and what I found was discount coupons. I much preferred Yelp which was fun and took me where I wanted to go. I found that Yelp did what i expected it to do. I also tried Craig's List which was very easy to use.
I noticed that there were several sites that we had experience with such as Flickr, Rollyo and Library Thing.
I'm not sure what use Craig's List would be for the Library but it is good to know how to use these popular sites.

I used Google Docs and Spreadsheets. It was easy to use. I just had a class in Microsoft Word last week so I am wondering if I really needed it. With all Google is doing on the web, and now they are trying to get phone connections I am wondering if they are trying to take over the world.
The Google Docs was easy to use as was the part of the spreadsheet that I did.

All About Wiki's Some of the Wiki's I looked at were interesting I looked at a Book Lover's Wiki and Library Success. I wasn't impressed with the Book Lover's Wiki as it was very like Amazon.com. People sharing their thoughts about a particular book. Amazon would be easier to use as you can just type in the title and see what people are saying about a particular book whereas Book Lover's Wiki had random books.
I did like Library's Success a best practaces Wiki. I saw some interesting things about adult programing that were useful.
I'm not sure how much I would use these Wiki's but it was an interesting experience.

Into a New World of Librarianship and To a better place in Time talk about the place of Libraries in the world today. The changes in the profession and the differences that have occured in the past few years seem to continue the ever changing profession. We are a profession that goes back in time and yet change is about going forward and that is what is happening at an exhilerated pace. The need for change and technolgy is an ongoing challenge these days. The idea of technology for the sake of technology is not a good choise. We need to be selective about technology as we have been about media and books. Library 2.0 should be a useful blueprint for the future.

I missed something here but i did find Bookride which is information on old old used books or as they say the most wanted and collected books. I found this interesting. I will be using this. Hopefully it is something customers can use when doing research on used books. I do get asked from time to time and our resources are insufficient.

I tried to watch the video of del.icio.us, it wasn't working. I looked at theMCPL site and really that wasn't much of a help either. I'm not sure how helpful this tagging site is. I guess if you are blogging a lot it would be helpful to have some way to find things. So far no one has asked for any help with any of these things but i feel that i am prepared if someone does

I had fun with Rollyo or it had fun with me. I searched for Samuel Adams in the image finder and got copies of the beer label. I wanted rabble-rouser of the revolutionary war. I guess I need to search more for the 21st century.

I just started my own on line. What fun. I put some books in but will need to think about the tabs a little before I add more. I think i'm going to really enjoy this. Obviously it is the Librarian in be that wants to catalog things.

It took a while and a little help from my friends but here is my avatar. I was able to send a post card of this to my daughter, I think. It may be that I am tired when I do this but i am finding it useful but difficult. What i like least is that you have to sign up for so many different things.

Ok, sure. We’ve all got our little preconceived notions about who librarians are and what they do.

Many people think of librarians as diminutive civil servants, scuttling about "Sssh-ing" people and stamping things. Well, think again buster.

Librarians have degrees. They go to graduate school for Information Science and become masters of data systems and human/computer interaction. Librarians can catalog anything from an onion to a dog’s ear. They could catalog you.

Librarians wield unfathomable power. With a flip of the wrist they can hide your dissertation behind piles of old Field and Stream magazines. They can find data for your term paper that you never knew existed. They may even point you toward new and appropriate subject headings.

People become librarians because they know too much. Their knowledge extends beyond mere categories. They cannot be confined to disciplines. Librarians are all-knowing and all-seeing. They bring order to chaos. They bring wisdom and culture to the masses. They preserve every aspect of human knowledge. Librarians rule. And they will kick the crap out of anyone who says otherwise.

I checked all the different things suggested by Merlin. I found them all confusing. I was able to find feeds but nothing i was really interested in. I tried finding library feeds and i did find ala but it did not have a feed line

I've set up my bloglines account and I've really enjoyed getting mail from the dictionary. I get a new word each day. Great voc. builder. I am still working with the rest of the things under week 4.

Week 3 Number 7

I was speaking with one of our customers and he was telling me that he has invented a gadget to translate languages. So if you are speaking to a frenchman he can talk to you in french and this invention will translate it and you will hear it in english. I know that there are other gadgets out their that do this but his incorporates some new digital technologies. I don't think he has pattened it yet so that I do not want to get more specific but it sounded like it would be easy to use small and easy to transport. I hope he is successful as his gadget sounds like something i would like to use.

I played with mappr for a while and found that i could not do what i wanted to do. I wanted to map where i've been and perhaps see where i will be going. I found that i would need to upload pictures first. I think i am not quite ready for that. Perhaps sometime soon i will try to get this going. For now the exploration was fun and a little frustrating.

I had a little trouble with this but as you can see I was able to get it done with a little help from my friends. The pictures of this ancient site are fabulous but not as great as seeing it up close and in person. I got this picture from flickr but the picture at the bottom of the page is one i took.

I tried to find a picture on flickr of Machu Picchu and post it on my blog however i was only able to get the url from there. So I found one of my own pictures and was able to post it via my email. It all seems a bit complicated to me, maybe because i am new at all this.

I looked at flickr and found it to be interesting. Are we supposed to post a picture? Jenny showed me some of her pictures on flickr. I think i will try to post one.
